The Great Pit of Daznak is the largest fighting pit in the city of Meereen, as was seen in the fifth season of the Game of Thrones series, when Daenerys escapes on the back of her dragon after attacks by the Sons of the Harpy. In real life, the Bullring in Osuna stood in for the Great Pit.
Visit the bullring in Osuna where the scenes and battle of Danzak’s Pit were shot, and see other locations such as the church, university and a local quarry.
Osuna is a town in the province of Seville, located in the foothills of the Sierra Sur, 80km from Seville and 100km from Malaga.
The city has kept its old quarter to perfection, along with its baroque palaces and churches. Unesco has declared that Calle San Pedro was the second most beautiful street in Europe and the town was declared a Historic-Artistic site.
One of the most dramatic scenes of the fifth season of the hit TV show Game of Thrones was filmed in the Plaza de Toros in Osuna. Built in the early 1900s, this bullring is capable of holding 6500 viewers and has one of the largest diameters of any bullring in Spain.
The Plaza de Toros was used to represent a Daznak's pit, the largest fighting pit in the Slaver’s Bay city of Meereen, where a spectacular fight scene takes place with incredible special effects, featuring hundreds of nobles, slaves and Khaleesi’s dragon. It’s clear that CGI (computer-generated imagery) was used, adding a couple extra layers of seats, to make the arena look bigger than it really is.
Daenerys Targaryen (played by British actress Emilia Clarke) reluctantly agreed to reopen the fighting pits and was overseeing the fight at the Daznak’s Pit of Meereen, where Jorah Mormont fights with the hope of winning back Daenerys’ favor.
The Sons of the Harpy unexpectedly attack Daenerys and start to kill everyone in Daznak's pit. During the attack, the dragon Drogon suddenly appears and Daenerys flysaway on his back (for the first time in the Game of Thrones series) to an unknown location, leaving her advisors and allies in the centre of the pit.
The city of Osuna is quite proud of its involvement in the series and therefore the local museum decided to dedicate two rooms to a collection of Game of Thrones materials. In these two rooms, visitors will be able to see replica weapons, helmets and shields, as well as costumes, statues and artwork. There is also a significant collection of photos from filming and original autographs from the actors and actresses featured in the series.
Casa Curro, a local restaurant often visited by the cast during their time in the town, has even created a special menu to honor the protagonists of the show, including a Khaleesi spinach, Arya salad, a Jon Snow chicken curry, and even a venison stew called Lannister.
Come to Dorne and Meereen and explore the Water Gardens and the Daznak's fighting pit! You will have access to a lot of information about the shooting of the TV series, gossips and stories about the crew in Seville. With a full-day tour option, travel the train to neighboring town of Osuna to see the filming location of Mereen, including Danzak’s fighting pit, and savor a feast fit for the Mother of Dragons herself.
